STUART, FLORIDA, Monday 3/28/11

Boats on fire at a Stuart, Fl marina - YOU MAY HAVE TO ENDURE A 15 Second COMMERCIAL FIRST -

BOATING SEASON HAS OPENED - - !!

LAST SUNDAY (3/20/11), Captain Dave Anderson had the honor of getting our first legitimate Boating Season case, which wound up  being a chain reaction of Boating Follies that didn't want to stop - - sorta like a "Train Wreck" - - We had a surprise sunny and 80 plus degree day, SO that means that many of our CABIN FEVER sufferers HAD to get on the water - - Not all were prepared.  MIX a newly purchased boat, out for the first time this year, add a Novice Boater at the helm, throw in a DISTRAUGHT wife, who was ready to immediately give up the family's newest hobby - - "boating", then throw in a DEAD BATTERY, 2 grand kids,  and you have a VERY VOLATILE MIX!  IT WENT KINDA LIKE BELOW:

This should have been a single, simple, at the dock "Jump Start" by vehicle.  Capt Dave arrives at Bridal Cave docks by truck and gets them started, they shove off and "kill" it about 100 yards out (oops!) - - It then turned in to a nightmare which had Capt Dave climbing up and down the bluffs at Bridal Cave carrying a 20 pound "Jump Pack" (which seemed to gain 25 lbs every time he told the story), providing services to this boat 3 separate times over the period of an hour.  Trying to catch them as the wind blew them toward shore, the "boater's" attempt to throw a 6 ft line and think it will reach 30 feet!  At one point Dave asked them to throw him a longer line, like the "anchor line" he suggested, the wife threw him the end of the Anchor line, which he caught - - while the "husband" threw the ANCHOR over too! - - - Finally, (with the help of a good sam pontoon boat) Dave was able to capture them and get them started and running a second time at which point they headed for their Condo dock about 3 miles away - - - first going in the wrong direction - - Capt Dave finally makes it back to his truck (where he tipped his 14 year old "guide"who had lead him up and down the bluffs) and heads out to meet them at their dock, retrieve our jump pack and fill out the paper work - - he arrives where they should be, but doesn't see them - - He hears voices several docks away and finds them once again DISABLED - ADRIFT with a stern line wrapped in their prop!! - - As the wind blows them close by a dock, he is able to get a line from them (after telling them to please keep the anchor on board) - and FINALLY Gets them to their home dock and the boat on it's lift and untangled the mooring line from their prop - - YEP - THE SEASON IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!  LESSON LEARNED - - NEVER RESPOND TO ANY CALL WITHOUT A BOAT!!!! - - If this is an "omen" for the 2011 season - - we're in TROUBLE!!

4000+ MILES, Yet still touched - TSUNAMI

Brookings, Oregon, March 11, 2011 - over 4000 miles from JAPAN, yet, still touched by this terrible tragedy - As shown on BITTER END BLOG yesterday - the TSUNAMI traveled around the world to cause problems for us in the US.  I echo the thoughts of Capt Rodriguez in his BLOG POST yesterday:  "The devastation in Japan is unfathomable. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Japanese people."

While in the Coast Guard, I spent a lot of time in JAPAN in the 1980's and worked in many of the area's that have been hardest hit - I hope that many of the friends I made while there are safe - - -

LOST & FOUND - (It may have been the camouflage?)

This little 1989 Center Console Wellcraft decided to take a trip on its own around the first of the month after some heavy rain and wind shook it off it's lift.  Adrift, partially sunk and reported to the water patrol, we were called in to pump it out, pick it up and locate the owner.  This little boat had an interesting "paint job" (Urban Camouflage)  which closely resembled camouflage painting of WWI warships and Troop Transports.

"Razzel Dazzel" was returned to her owner this week
SEE MY POST of last February RAZZEL DAZZEL! - War Paint? for more details on early "Stealth" Paint jobs.  The camouflage and the wild painting of ships in WORLD WAR I, (1914-1918) was used to confuse enemy submarines, an article in "TwistedSifter" also talks about the father of "Dazzle Camouflage".  Its a  great article with some super photo's (entire TwistedSifter article can be found HERE).

BOATING EDUCATION IS YEAR ROUND - -

It is NEVER to early to begin to think about Summer, Boating and having FUN!!  Recently many of us have coped with a SEVERE case of Cabin Fever - -But, recently, the sun has shone and we have had some very warm days.  The snow drifts melted, the coats came off and SOME of us even got a "hair" and took an early boat ride.  Anxious - -?? Can't Wait? - You bet!!!! - - - In your haste - - don't throw caution to the wind - - NOW or at ANY TIME - -

REMEMBER TO OPERATE A VESSEL IN MISSOURI ANYONE BORN AFTER JANUARY 1, 1984,  MUST HAVE A MISSOURI BOATING SAFETY CARD.

Who Needs a Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card?
  • Anyone born after January 1, 1984, must successfully complete a boating safety education course to legally operate any vessel on the lakes of Missouri, including personal watercraft.
  • Successful students are issued a certificate by the Missouri State Water Patrol, which is valid for the student's lifetime.

DON'T WRECK YOUR'S (or anyone's) SUMMER!

IN MEMORY - LAST AMERICAN WW1 VET DIES (2/27/11)

Last American WWI Veteran Dies

WASHINGTON – Frank Woodruff Buckles, the last surviving American World War I veteran, died yesterday at his West Virginia home. He was 110.

Sixteen-year-old Buckles enlisted in the Army on Aug. 14, 1917 after lying to several recruiters about his age.
“I was just 16 and didn’t look a day older. I confess to you that I lied to more than one recruiter. I gave them my solemn word that I was 18, but I’d left my birth certificate back home in the family Bible. They’d take one look at me and laugh and tell me to home before my mother noticed I was gone,” Buckles wrote in 2009.
Buckles tried the Marines and Navy, but both turned him away. An Army recruiter, however, accepted his story.
“Somehow I got the idea that telling an even bigger whopper was the way to go. So I told the next recruiter that I was 21 and darned if he didn’t sign me up on the spot!” he wrote.
Buckles earned the rank of corporal and traveled England and France serving as an ambulance driver. After the Armistice in 1918, Buckles escorted prisoners of war back to Germany. He was discharged in 1920.
In 1942 Buckles worked as a civilian for a shipping company in the Philippines, where he was captured in Manila by the Japanese the day after they attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He spent three and a half years in the Los BaƱos prison camp. He was rescued on February 23, 1945.
Buckles married Audrey Mayo of Pleasanton, Calif., in 1946. The couple moved to his Gap View Farm near Charles Town in January 1954 where Buckles reportedly continued to drive his tractor until he was 106.
On February 4, 2008, with the death of 108-year-old Harry Richard Landis, Buckles became the last surviving American World War I veteran. Since, Buckles championed veterans’ causes, was invited to the White House and honored at the Pentagon.
In March 2008 Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates honored Buckles during a Pentagon ceremony in which officials unveiled a World War I veterans’ exhibit.
“Whoever views this display will, I am sure, feel a connection to Mr. Buckles and his comrades-in-arms,” Gates said. “We will always be grateful for what they did for their country 90 years ago.”
Buckles, then 107, received a standing ovation from the mostly military audience.
“I feel honored to be here as a representative of the veterans of WWI and I thank you,” Buckles said.
Buckles is survived by his daughter, Susannah Buckles Flanagan. His wife, Audrey, died in 1999.
In a White House statement issued today President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama saluted the fallen veteran.
“Frank Buckles lived the American Century,” the President stated. “Like so many veterans, he returned home, continued his education, began a career, and along with his late wife Audrey, raised their daughter Susannah. And just as Frank continued to serve America until his passing, as the Honorary Chairman of the World War I Memorial Foundation, our nation has a sacred obligation to always serve our veterans and their families as well as they’ve served us.
WORLD WAR I MEMORIAL, Wash D.C.
“We join Susannah and all those who knew and loved her father in celebrating a remarkable life that reminds us of the true meaning of patriotism and our obligations to each other as Americans.”
