RENTAL BOAT SAFETY, NEW USCG WEB SITE

It is a known fact that Rental boats are very popular and many rental companies are providing an increasing variety of sizes and types of boats for rent.  The amount of experience, training and knowledge the "renter" may have (or say they have) ranges anywhere along the scale between 0 and a lot -.  There are no particular set of standards to which a company must adhere that might standardize the training a person renting a boat for the first time should have, or get.   Many rent a boat for family outings, fishing or just cruising, while others rent a boat to load up with there friends and get to the nearest "party" as quickly as possible - .  The current economic climate may even drive more persons who might be a first time boat buyer to consider renting an upscale boat for the weekend for a fraction of what owning the boat might cost.

Regardless, if you own a boat or rent one, there are a number of safety related and other responsibilities that apply to all boat operators no matter what their ownership status may be.  If you plan to rent a boat this season or know someone who is, you (or they) might want to take a few moments and review the information provided on this site.  It allows you to choose from several boat types that you might be renting and gives you highlights, safety and awareness tips that you need.  It  places a strong emphasis on the RENTAL company's responsibility to insure that all your questions are answered and you are comfortable with taking the boat out.  There are also pdf downloadable check lists for renting that you can use to insure that both you (and the rental company) understand your responsibilities for the safe operation of the vessel you are renting.
